Creating Exceptional Outdoor Dining Spaces for Country Clubs
For country clubs, the member experience extends well beyond the golf course, tennis courts or clubhouse. A beautiful terrace where members can enjoy lunch after a round, meet friends for drinks or gather for a special occasion can become one of the most valued spaces within the club.
But making the most of an outdoor dining area in the UK presents its challenges. Unpredictable weather, strong sunlight, cooler evenings and seasonal changes can all limit how often a terrace can be used.
With a bespoke outdoor shading solution from Broadview, country clubs can transform underused terraces into stylish, comfortable spaces that enhance the member experience and provide greater flexibility for dining and entertaining throughout the year.
Make More of Your Club's Outdoor Space
Many country clubs already have the perfect setting for outdoor dining, whether that's a landscaped garden, an elegant clubhouse terrace or a space overlooking a golf course, river or marina. The opportunity is to make that space more practical and inviting in a wider range of conditions.
A bespoke pergola or outdoor living system can provide shelter from rain and direct sunshine while creating a defined dining area that feels like a natural extension of the clubhouse. Add integrated heating, lighting and glazing, and the terrace can become a destination in its own right, rather than somewhere members use only on warm, sunny days.
For clubs looking to enhance their hospitality offering, this can also create opportunities to accommodate more diners, host private functions and make better use of existing outdoor space.
Let's Look at Three of Our Country Club Projects That Show What's Possible
At Broadview, we work with hospitality and leisure venues to design and install outdoor shading solutions tailored to their surroundings, practical requirements and customers. These three projects demonstrate how the right combination of features can transform an outdoor area.
Sandford Springs Hotel & Country Club, Hampshire
Sandford Springs Hotel & Country Club in Kingsclere wanted to maximise the potential of its outdoor dining area and create a premium hospitality environment that could be enjoyed in greater comfort throughout the year.
We installed three Brustor B200XL pergola systems, incorporating a combination of single and twin roof configurations. The project was designed to complement the surrounding architecture while providing practical shelter and a sophisticated finish.
The installation included:
- Integrated LED louvre lighting to create ambience and support evening dining.
- Twelve infrared heaters to provide warmth in cooler conditions.
- Custom-built timber planters topped with sliding glass screens.
- Structural walls and integrated fire doors to support the layout and practical use of the space.
The result is a sheltered, flexible outdoor dining environment that allows guests to enjoy open-air dining during warmer weather, with additional protection when conditions are colder or wetter.
For country clubs, the project demonstrates how carefully specified pergolas, heating, lighting and glazed screens can work together to create a premium outdoor hospitality space.

Phyllis Court Members Club, Henley-on-Thames
Phyllis Court Members Club, set within 18 acres overlooking the River Thames, wanted to expand its outdoor capacity while maintaining the elegance of its Georgian-style clubhouse. The solution needed to provide a comfortable, all-weather space suitable for dining, weddings and events, without compromising the character of this established members' club.
We recommended a Brustor B250XL pergola with a louvred roof and frameless sliding glass walls. The resulting 80m² area can seat 60 guests in a sheltered environment, with 3kW heaters and integrated LED mood lighting helping to create a welcoming atmosphere.
To make even better use of the riverside terrace, we also installed five commercial umbrellas with integrated RGB lighting, providing additional space for 30 guests. Vertical sliding glass windbreakers were fitted to the west-facing area to help manage changing weather conditions.
The project shows how different shading solutions can be combined to create distinct outdoor zones, giving clubs greater flexibility for everyday dining and larger occasions.

Chichester Yacht Club, Chichester Marina
Outdoor spaces with exceptional views are valuable assets for any club. The challenge is making them comfortable without losing the scenery that makes them special.
Chichester Yacht Club wanted to refresh its popular outdoor seating area and make it more practical throughout the year. The existing terrace was uncovered, leaving members and visitors exposed to strong sunshine and passing showers. Wind from the coast was another important consideration, while maintaining views across the marina was essential.
We installed a Brustor B200XL louvred-roof structure measuring 12m x 4.5m. The system incorporates remote-controlled LED lighting and 2.3kW heaters, with sliding glass panels providing wind protection along the front while preserving the outlook.
Bespoke timber planters complement the clubhouse, and a fire door was incorporated to meet the project's safety requirements.
The adjustable roof allows the club to control shade, ventilation and shelter, while the integrated drainage system helps manage rainwater. The result is a more versatile outdoor seating area that can be enjoyed in a wider range of weather conditions.
For country clubs with landscaped grounds, golf course views or waterside terraces, this project demonstrates how outdoor comfort can be improved without sacrificing the setting.

The Features That Make the Difference
Every club has different requirements, but the most successful outdoor dining spaces combine attractive design with practical features that make the area more comfortable and versatile.
- Adjustable louvred roofs: A louvred-roof pergola allows you to adjust the roof to manage sunlight and ventilation, or close it when shelter from rain is needed. This gives clubs greater flexibility as conditions change throughout the day.
- Integrated heating: Infrared heaters can help keep members comfortable when temperatures fall, extending the useful hours of a terrace and making it more inviting for evening meals, drinks and events.
- LED lighting: Integrated lighting creates atmosphere after dark while providing practical illumination for dining and socialising. Depending on the system, lighting can be specified to complement the club's architecture and the experience it wants to create.
- Sliding glass panels and wind protection: Glazed panels can help protect diners from wind and rain while retaining views across the surrounding grounds. Depending on the design, panels can be opened when conditions are favourable and closed when additional shelter is needed.
- Commercial umbrellas and parasols: For terraces that need a more flexible arrangement, commercial umbrellas and parasols can provide shade and shelter without requiring a permanent enclosed structure. They can also complement a pergola, creating additional seating zones across a larger outdoor area.
Enhance the Member Experience and Make Better Use of Your Terrace
Investing in an outdoor dining area is about more than adding covers. It's about creating a space members genuinely want to use.
A well-designed terrace can provide somewhere to relax after sporting activities, enjoy lunch with friends, meet colleagues or celebrate a special occasion. It can also give the club more options for private dining, receptions and events.
By improving comfort and flexibility, a bespoke outdoor structure can help clubs make better use of existing space and potentially increase hospitality capacity. The commercial benefits will depend on each club's operating model, demand and how the space is used, but the opportunity is to get more value from an area that might otherwise sit empty in less favourable weather.
Crucially, the design should feel like a natural extension of the club. Materials, finishes, lighting and layout can all be considered alongside the building and landscape, ensuring the finished space complements the club's character.
