Having worked with the National Trust on previous projects, we were contacted by their Knoll Beach site in Studland Bay, Dorset, to provide three zones of shading cover for their shop, information hut and discovery centre.
The shaded zones were intended to provide shelter during unpleasant weather, as well as provide welcome relief from the sun during the summer months.
After an initial consultation with the team at Knoll Beach, we set about designing a range of canopies and awnings that would meet the requirements for each of the three sheltered zones.
We created a covered area for the shop using a Sunrain wood effect outdoor structure, which maximised their sales space by allowing them to display goods outside without concern that they may be damaged by the elements.
The veranda structure also provided shade inside the shop and lowered the inside temperature on warm days, making the working environment more comfortable for staff during their busiest season.
A canopy was installed on the information hut, which protected staff working there and visitors whilst queuing to find out more information on the area.
Finally, a B35 awning covering 11 metres was connected to the Discovery Centre - a building that seats up to 40 people and is used for educational visits, as well as private hire and events. Installing the awning allowed the National Trust to expand their capacity and offer a sheltered outdoor area, which can be used for al fresco dining.
All of the shading products that we installed were highly durable and able to cope with the demands of such a windy and exposed location. Special brackets and groundworks formed part of the installation work to ensure sturdiness and longevity. We were also able to work around the opening times of the site so as not to cause a disturbance or inconvenience to their staff and visitors.
