School Awning Installation in London

The Brief:

Founded in 1885, Dulwich Prep London is the largest preparatory school in the United Kingdom that teaches over 850 pupils between three and thirteen. The school’s aim is to embrace change and keep pace with pedagogy and technology, to inspire excellence in all their pupils. The client contacted Broadview as they wanted to control solar gain and glare within their classrooms, whilst retaining the natural light, and provide pupils with sufficient shade when outside.

The Broadview Solution:

After a consultation with the client, an extensive assessment of the site was performed by our experts to ensure the placement of the awnings would be safe and secure. Shortly after Broadview started designing, supplying and installing the external awnings to accommodate Dulwich Prep London’s detailed brief.

We installed four motorised bespoke Sunrain awning systems to the exterior of four classrooms. The remote controlled awnings are fully retractable and can open or retract in a flash, ideal for teachers and pupils alike to have fast protection from weather elements. The awnings have a bespoke gutter system, that diverts rainwater away from anyone underneath into the surrounding goal post structure, that’s placed over the classroom windows. Constructed from 120mm by 120mm galvanised steel, the goal posts were inserted one metre into the ground in order to withstand any strain.

The awnings framework is powder-coated aluminium to complement the building’s external aesthetics. Made of PVC material the cream awnings will be long-lasting for Dulwich Prep London, as they’re easy to clean and low maintenance with waterproof benefits the new awnings are a perfect addition to the school. The Sunrain awnings are easily activated by the latest Somfy remote control technology to ensure user-friendliness. The Somfy hardware consists of four Centralis wall-mounted switches, which have been installed in each classroom to enable teachers to control, and one Telis 4 hand-held master control for the caretaker. Two wind sensors were also installed for security reasons, security was important to our client. The installation of the bespoke awnings took eight days for our experts.

The Results:

Dulwich Prep London is delighted with the final results of the bespoke Sunrain awnings. Our team have completed the client’s brief on time and in budget, and the school now has a new undercover area of more than 90 square metres for its pupils. The Sunrain awnings not only give the school internal shading at the flick of a switch, it prevents heat gain and solar glare. The awning’s PVC material absorbs harmful UV rays, that can overheat children and teachers inside the classroom if directly exposed, with the installation of the Sunrain awnings this problem has been deterred.

“We were delighted to have been appointed to carry out this awning installation at the school. The Sunrain awnings not only give the school shading within the classrooms but the product also provides the school with an undercover area to keep pupils protected from the weather. We are extremely delighted with the finished result.”  - Quoted from the Sales Director at Broadview
